The Most Boring Weight-Lifting Tip Ever: Use a running timer with a buzzer

Weightlifting enthusiasts know that when you lift weights, you’re supposed to give yourself 30 seconds to 2 minutes of rest time in between sets. But don’t let yourself get distracted: use a running timer that buzzes every 30 seconds to keep your mind from wandering.

For someone who’s constantly distracted by everything, the rest period between weightlifting sets is the perfect amount of time to glance at my phone and let 3 minutes go by because I got distracted by email, Facebook, or whatever.

That’s me. I’m this douchebag, “resting” in between sets, while I check IMDB for that actor’s name in “Jane the Virgin” (it’s Justin Baldino.) Source: http://www.123rf.com/

The result? A normally 30 weight-lifting session take 40 minutes, and I run late dropping my kid off to daycare. Again. And I get the hairy eyeball from my kid’s teacher.

Much like P.E. class where a coach is constantly blowing a whistle to get you moving, I started using a YouTube video that sounds a buzzer every 30 seconds for 30 minutes. It’s a bit jarring to listen to, but I promise you it works. Hearing that buzzer jogs me out of my reverie, so that I can head back to the barbell for another set of back squats.

If 30 seconds isn’t a good timing interval for you, YouTube has plenty of other versions too, such as a 60 second interval or even a 30-minute long Tabata version.

So what other weird tricks do you have for working out? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
